Original Correspondence.

(To the Editor of the Bruce Herald.)

Sik, — Of course you will know by advertisement, which appeared in the 'Herald,' tliiit public tenders wefe called for the erection of a school building at Kuitangata. The School Committee met here on Thursday evening to open the tenders (6), which stood thus — Mr James Young, Clutha Ferry, L 143 ; W. T. Smith, L 146 3s ; and .the other four upwards to close on L2OO. Now, what have our Committee done ? They have accepted the fourth 'tender, that of Mr James Dickson, Milton, for reasons which 1 si^pose must be best known to themselves. Now, Mr Editor, is that fair to put men tb the trouble and expense of going to see plans, mate out tenders when they are to be used in such a manner, and more especially when they have such names as the above— lowest tenders — which was a perfect guarantee that the work would be carried out ?

I would ask what is the good in advertising for tenders ? Is i.t to encourage our local papers ? . No ! It is a blindfold— a deception. Why hot give Mr Dickson the job at his own private offer? That would be too glaring. I regret that the conduct of our Committee should have been the means of bringing these few lines from me. The names of Committee appeared in ' Herald ' the other week.

I am, &c.j Faieplay,

[We have struck out of 'the letter, a portion imputing motives and action in a matter entirely unconnected with the subject of complaint. — Ed. 'B. H.'l
