EXAMINATION OF THE WAIHOLA SCHOOL.
The examination of the Waihola Gorge School took place on Monday, the 2^th iristThe examination was conducted by Mr A. y. Smith, the teacher of the school, assisted by Messrs , M'Oann, M'intyre, and Neill, teachers. A great number of the parents were present, and two members of Committee. The-children stood the te&t of a searching examination iii a very creditable manner, and. by the prompt and correct answers they gave to the various questions put, reflected great credit 6n thenfselves and their painstaking
taking teacher. .After the children had been questioned, and cross questioned, in a thorough manner on the different, branches taught, especially in Geography, Grammar, Euclid, and Latin, Mr Lindsay awarded the prizes as follows :—

Third English. Class — 1, James Macdonald ; 2, Elizabeth Finch. Fourth English Class— l, Samuel Hegan. Fifth. English Class— l, Harry Black ;2, George Lindsay. Junior English Class— l, Edward Grey ;2, Robert Hegan. Senior English Class— i,. George Grey. .Junior Grammar — 1, Harry Bla^k ; 2, Edward Duthie, Senior Grammar — 1, George Grey. Junior Geography — 1, Harry Black ; 2, Edward Duthie. Senior Geography — 1, George Duthie. '.First Arithmetic Class — 1, Archibald Macdonald ; 2, Frances Dyer. Seoond Arithmetic Class — 1, Eliza Lindsay ; 2. Robert Taylor. Third Arithmetic Class — 1, Harry Black ; 2. Charles Grey. Fourth Arithmetic Class — 1, Robert Black. First Writing CI.IS3 — 1, James France. Second Writing Class — 1, William Moore. Third Writing Class — 1, George Duthie. Junior Latin — 1, Robert Black. Senior Latin — 1 , George Grey. Mathematics — 1, George Grpy. Mental Arithmetic — 1, Harry Rlack. Efficiency in Drill — George Lindsay. Prize given by Mrs Duthie for Best Attendance — Samuel Hegan.
Prize given by Mrs Blues for Good Conduct — Charles Grey.
After the prizes had been distributed, Mr Lindsay said that he felt gratified at the success of the day's proceedings. He thought that those present could not fail to notice a vast improvement on previous years, and was happy to see so many of the parents present, as it evinced on their parts an interest in the all important duty which fell upon each of them — viz., to give a strict attention to training the young. He had much pleasure, in the name of the Committee, in proposing a hearty vote of thanks to those of the parents who were present, and especially to those of the visitors who had taken part in the examination.
Mr Win. Black said, he had much pleasure in endorsing Mr Lindsay's remarks with re gard to the progress made during the year, and thought that if they continued to go on improving at the same rate they would make a particularly good show next year.
Mr M'intyre rose to thank those present for the vote r.f thanks proposed and given to those who had taken part ii'x the examination. He considered the pupils in the senior classes to be well grounded in all that he had heard them questioned upon, especially those in the Senior Grammar Clas3, and in Euclid and Latin. .He thought the district ought to be proud of such a teacher as Mr Smith, and that he (Mr S.), in return, need not be ashamed of such apt and promising pupils.
