WEST TAIERI.
(From our own correSpoMfrifc.) (Unavoidably held over from our last issue.) We have been favored with k yisit from Mr Short, of Sydney^ the travelling agent for the Australian Mutual Provident Society* who delivered a most interesting lecture on Life Assurance here, oh Monday, 6th inst.j in the Drill-shed, and in the SchoOl-rooni', East Taieri, on. the following Thursday. Our worthy ministers on each occasion presided over large and enthusiastic audiencas, who testified their approval of the benefits of life assurance in the niost 8 itisfactory mannsf, nearly 50 applicants having thereafter enrolled themselves as members of the association for amounts small and large. An amateur entertainment under , the auspices of Court Prince Alfred, A. O. F •, in aid of the widow and orphans' fund of thab Court, was held in the Drill-shed, Outrarri, on Friday the 10th inst. There was a large number present, as is always the case in West Taiefi when the object is charitable. The Misses Richardson presided at the piano, and accompanied by Mr Walter Richardson on the cornet, opened the concert with Lord Hafdwiche^s march, and the grand Hauovarian march, both piecus being most de^ servedly applauded Miss K. Richardson aung " I love the merry merry sunshine," and received a warm encore. Miss E. 0. Ure sang " Home, Sweet Home," and oil being encored, sang "'Jessie of Dumblane." Mr Ander3-)ii then danced a hornpipe iii splendid style. Mr Graham sang "Scotland I lo'ethee," and narrowly escapsd an encore: The dialogue of "A recipe hbiv to brew a storm,': by the Messrs Macandrew, was rendered well, and took capitally, Mr R. MaCandrew acting the part of - the bad-tetripered wife to perfection. Miss E. C. Ure sang •' The Old Oaken Bucket." and received great applause Recitation, " The Cottar's Saturn day Night," Mr Wm. Macandrew. Mis 9M. Richardson sang "Bonnie Prince Charge,'' and was warmly encored, when ahe gave " Come Ower the Stream Charlie." Recitation, '' Loclvel's Warning," by Mr Beamish. Song, " Here's a health bonnie Scotland to thee, 'by Mr Waugh. Misa K. Richardson then sang " Beautiful Star" most chavmingly. The " Royal Trish Quadrilles " by Mr Walter Richardson on the violin, and the Misses Richardson on the piano, was received with thundering applause. After " CJod Save the Queen" was sung by the company, the hall was cleared of the seats and a dance was got up, at which a number joined for about two hours.
