A LEGEND OF THE DAISY.

.Many years ago, when flowers first covered the earth, the faries each each chose one which was to be their special care, a-ncl which they weri' always to protect and guard, sheltering it from the cold and blustering winds that bruised its -delicate petals, and from the burning sun that made them droop and hide, beneath its scorching ravs, "

The Fairy Queen chose the rose—fairest of all flowers—and thus gained the name it hears, "Queen of the Flowers," Each fairy in turn gathered some lovely blossom, which she promised she would ever cherish and protect—all hut the Fairy of .Dawn. She loved all the flowers. But she had noticed that it was only when she appeared clad in gold and crimson, tinged with the roseate hues that betokened the. aa wn of a fair and sunny summer's clay, that the flowers smiled a welcome to her. There was not a blossom, she sighed, that did not hang down its head and keep its petels closed when she brought a dull and rainy day with her. But she was wrong. Unseen by her, and almost hidden altogether from sight by the long grass that grew so high over its head, the modest little daisy opened wide its petels and gazed adoringly at the lovely Dawn Fairy, 'whether the east was cloudy or bright, as she appeared. Day by d.iy the little flower blossomed unoticcd, until one morning a gleam of sunlight lit upon its petels, making them shine .like, some rare jewels, and for the first time the Dawn Fairy saw the little flower gazing up at her so lovingly. "Dear little blossom," she said, "you are the only one who really returns the love I bestow on all, so you shall be my chosen flower." And, stooping down, she touched it with her rosy fingers, and placed it near her heart.
