A traveller on an Australian liner wiitcs to the Times that the Board 1 nf Trade licensed! the vessel to carry 580 souls, and it actually carries 85 first-class, 810 steerage passengers, and --J crow. Tlio utmost boat capacity was 740. The complainant states that all emigrant ships are similarly overcrowded since assisted passages came into operation. (Received January 4, 10.10 a.m.) LONDON, January 3. In connection with the alleged overcrowding of emigrant ships, the Pall Mall Gazette, after enquiry at official quarters, explains that the trave'Wer evidently overlooked the fact tlrat a. steamer's license does not apply when she becomes an emigrant ship. The Board of Trade's supervision- makes overcrowding impossible.
