At; the conclusion of the coroner's enquiry into the fire in an ironmongery store on Jervois-road, Ponsonby, on February 26, in which it was shown that the outbreak occurred in more than one place, the police arrested Walter Bates, occupant of the premises, and he is charged that he wilfully attempted to set fire to the building, with intend to defraud the Royal Exchange and Standard insurance companies.
