The names of Messrs G. Wratt and George Wright are freely mentioned in connection with the coming Mayoral contest. The settlers of Te Rehunga held a most enjoyable picnic on Mr A. Paul's property yesterday, under the auspices of the School Committee. Sports of various kinds were provided for young and old, and a particularly enjoyable day was spent. The men's race was won by Mr \V. Monteith. At the tennis tournament at Palmerston yesterday, Miss Hartgill defeated Mrs Payne in the final of the singles by .12 to 10.: Prouse and Fisher won the doubles, and Misses .Simpson and N. Wilson the ladies' handicap doubles, in the handicap singles, Fisher (scr) beat Reed (33), 60 —57. Fisher and Miss Hartgill won the combined doubles. There was one of the best yardings of tiie season at the Miller's-road yards to-day, this being especially so in sheep, although they consisted chietiy of agedewes. The heavy yarding had a depreciative effect on prices. A fair, entry of good class sheep were entered also, but have not been submitted at the time of writing. The entry of cattle conains some very fair lines of steers and bullocks. Our readers are reminded of the display of fireworks to be made on the Domain to-night. Mr Hopkins lias made careful arrangements to ensure a first-class show. A few musical items and some animated pictures will precede the fireworks. The Town Band will be present, and we trust that Mr Hopkins' generous offer to augment the Hospital funds will moot witli a liberal supoprt from the public.
