WANG AN UI WINS THE SHIELD

[press association.] WANGANUI, March 17. The band contest was continued to-day.

Twelve bands competed in the quickstep. Wanganui Garrison carried off first prize with a total of 285J points, of which. 130 were for music. Blenheim was second with 283—122, Petone came third with 265—126. Feilding was awarded 223*.

During the afternoon Mr James Crichton, late conductor of the AYanganui Garrison Band, was presented witli a gold medal to commemorate the fact that he was conductor of the finest performance by any massed band in New Zealand, viz., that at the garden party mi Tuesday

Mr Maurice Cohen was presented with a handsome oil painting on the occasion of his resigning the presidency of the North Island Brass Band Association, after holding office for twelve years.

The quartette competition resulted:—Nelson 1, Wangauui 2. WANGANUI, This Day. The weather continues beautiful for the band contest, and a large attendance is expected at the final tests to-night.

This morning the Bass Trombone, and E Flat Tenor Horn solos were decided. Five competed' in the former, which Was won. by L. Holdaway, of Blenheim, with ll'3 points. H. Birmingham, of Wanganui, was second, with 112; G. Boyd, of Wanganui, third, 110. C. Hansen, of Nelson, won the Horn Solo, with 115 points; Powes, Wanganui Garrison, second, 111; T. Williams, Gisborhe, thirdj 109. There were thirteen competitors. The judge remarked, in giving his decision on this event, that as in most of the pieces played during the contest, the chief fault was inconception. NORTH ISLAND BRASS BAND ASSOCIATION. WANGANUI, March 17. The annual meeting of the North Island Brass Band Association was held this evening, 50 delegates being present. Mr Louis Cohen was elected president. Messrs Holben and Charker were re-elected secretary and treasurer respectively ; timekeeper, Mr J. Hunter; executive, Messrs J. T. Muir, J. Trussell (Wanganui), Pederson (Marton), Havbittle (Feilding). M'Connell (Waitara), Patchett, Jupp (Wellington), Jones, Pringle, Mounsey (Palmerston North). The disqualification of the five Wellington players who applied was removed.

It was decided to make no change in the grading system.

The next contest is to be held in Palmerston North. Gisborne's claims for the 1912 contest is to be favorably considered.
