Captain F. W. Hunter, of the Dnion Steam Ship Company's steamer Maori, has been appointed to the position of second pilot at Lyttelton. There were twenty-eight applications for the position. Mr Gilbertson, of Waipukurau, was a visitor to Dannevirke to-day. It is stated that it is the intention of the Right Rev. F. Wallis, Bishop of Wellington, to retire shortly. We tinder stand that one of the first duties of the new Bishop of Waiapu will be the appointment of Canon Maine to the office of Dean. The Attorney-General (Hon. Dr. Findlay) is recruiting at Mt. Cook. He returns to Christchurch on Saturday. The Minister for Agriculture has gone to To Anau to look into matters connected with the Milford track. The Prime Minister will remain in Wellington till the end of January. Sir Joseph Ward will then return to Southland, accompanied by Lady Ward, and will enjoy a complete rest for a fortnight. The Hon. J. A. Millar visits Taupo on departmental business next week, and will take advantage of the opportunity of a few days' trout-fish-ing. The Minister for Railways will spend practically the whole of February in Dunedin. He leaves Wellington for Sydney on March 18, on a tour of inspection extending over four or five weeks, of the railways of the Commonwealth and the systems in force there. Miss Cora Anderson, of Stratford, who was trained in St. Helens Hospital at Auckland, has been appointed matron of the Townley Maternity Home.
