Mr Prettyman's amendment definitely exempting agricultural land from increment value duty was rejected by 301 to 196 amid loud Opposition cheering. The Nationalists supported the amendment. An angry scene followed the Chairman's accepting of Mr Lloyd-George's motion of closure on the first three lines of clause 1, thereby shutting out 38 amendments, including one vetoing the tax'on ungotten minerals. The Unionists shouted "Put the whole Bill," and declined to go into the lobbies. A scene continued until an adjournment was taken. Mr Lloyd-George, replying to a question, said he was prepared to accept an amendment whereby half tho increment: of the tax on land would go to the local authority. The Liberal "Whip has issued an appeal to members to organise demonstrations in the constituencies to counteract the efforts of Mr Long's Budget' Protest League. (Received this day, 8.55 a.m.) LONDON, yesterday. The distribution of half the proceeds of the increment. tax among the local authorities is intended to secure for the cities and towns a fair share of the value created by their enterprise.
