THE SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP.

[PKESB ASSOCIATION.] AVANGANUI, to-day. Favorable weather conditions have prevailed for the scullers during the past few days, and they have been able to got in some good rowing on the championship course, which is admirably sheltered, and with water almost like glass. Both tho champion and ex-champion have been very busy. On Tuesday afternoon Arnst and Fogwell, had a big spurt. Tho champion let his partner take a big break- (some 15 lengths) and thQn 6©t off after him. With such a start Fogwell had a little in reserve till the champion got up, and then the pair .finished 1 at a very solid pace. Much the same work was done yesterday and to-day, with time spent practising starting and sprinting. Long rows serve to show^-tho wonderful strength and staying powers of the champion, who usually appears to finish his heavy task full of rowing. He had : done some remark-, ably fine rowing during the past few weeks. ■ Webb and Welch had (a lively *pin over a couple of miles yesterday, tho ex-champion rowing 27 to the minuto for over just a.inilo, and then droping to 24. Webb can always hold his pacer comfortably, and in sprints appears much the speedier. He has never shown more pace, and the form shown by both contestants points to a great struggle, as, Webb is possessed, of wonderful stamina- and great pluck.
