' Tho seismograph at the Observatorj registered a shock of earthquake a1 1 7.12 on the morning of May 31st anc a second shock at 4.50 this moi'ning both being severe. The Governmeni 'Astronomer thinks that the. first record coincides with the shock reported as having occurred between Port Darwin, and one of the islands off the coast. The second occurred between 2000 and 3000 miles from, the Aus- , traltan coast.
