CORRESPONDENCE.
WORKMEN'S WAGES. . (To the Editor.) Sir,— l was at the Mayor's --meeting held in the Drill Hall ...before the mayoral election, ■ and* 1 heard our worthy Mayor say he was in favor of raising the salary of our Town Clerk., and Engineer, but nothing was. said about the men working in the Mangapiirupuru or any other wpr-k outside the Borough Council chambers, at 8s per day, or Is per hour, lost time. Now, I think what ought to be done. is to take about £50 from. each; of. the Town Clerk and the Engineer,, and raise the workmen outside, and the ratepayers wouldn't feel the.- extra . buxden. put upon them, and give those i^hat work an the. mud and slush all day and Avet feet and i^ooffice to sit in and a beautiful fire . to keep them warm.. I think the. workmen of the Council _ should rer t ceive a little consideration, and. I hope some of our worthy councillors will have a look' into the matter and see the conditions that the men work -under, as I think the^ man on low ■ wages should be given a chance to rise as well as those that are. getting a fair living all on top of the tree. An honest mantis worth ail honest pay, and every shilling spent you will get a-n honest shilling's worth of return. Sorry to trespass on yourvaluablo space. — I am, etc., RATEPAYER.
