TRADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL

'[PttfipS Association.] WELLINGTON, Yesterday

.It is stated that. at the last meeting of the Trades andpLabor Council attention was called to the fact that marked, discourtesy had -'beefi. shown to the Prime Minister -and other members of the Government by the Omission of the Labor Day, Committee to invited them to tl).e &>monstratioa on Labor Day. a motion was proposed censurmjr the 1 members of the council, \vho p/ave written -to. the 'newspapers for and against the action of the committee.

A lively..- discussion ensued and some plain and strong language used. An. amendment was moved that an apology be sent to the Ministers for the conduct of the committee, and that the council should disclaim responsibility for the committee's action.

In the course of the discussion, it was alleged that the action Kad been taken, by the Independent Political Labor party for the purpose of discrediting, if possible, the Government.

The action of the. two sections of Labor is freely commented on, members of the Liberal and Labor party contending that the' Trades and Labor Cduricil, by its present attitiide, had earned the contempt of workingmen of the dominion, y To- this reply is made by a 'prominent trades official that if he held the opinions just expressed he would resign from the Trades Council and that he would rather "die,in the gutter" than be a supporter of a party to which the previous speaker belonged, namely, the Liberal and Labor-" party. The discussion lasted till half-an-hour after midnight, but no decision was come to. The .question will probably come up again' at the next meeting of the Council.
