Considerable discussion took place at a meeting of . the Canterbury Trades and Labor Council- on a> motion to. support the Socialist candidates at the -general election. , The President ruled that the coxincii could not deal Avith the motion, as -the. rules of the council did not permit the discussion of party politics. A motion that the president's ruliag should, be disagreed with was lost on being put to the meeting, and the -ruling was upheld by a large majority. OAMARU, last ndght. Mr J. Mitchell, who opposes the Hon. T. Y. Duncan, fpr Oaniaru, addressed a good meeting of electors this evening. He pronounced himself a supporter of the freehold tenure. He said that the school syllabus was being over-crowded, and children were not receiving as- good an education as was given years ago. He defended « the Minister of Labor against the attacks made upon , him by trade unions. He favored , the policy of tlltTpfreseni; G!overninen.t, but claimed the right freely to criticise their doings. A vote of thanks and confidence was accorded.

Owing to serious indisposition overtaking him to-day, Mr John Loudon intimated to a large public meeting to-night that he had decided to retire from the contest for the Bruce seat. THAMES, to-day. Though satisfied with Mr McGowan the No-license party decided to noin_inate a candidate to ensure ,a valid local option vote. The Rev. F. Isitt will be asked to stand.
