A Dunedin wire states that the Empire Hotel, at Dunedin South, was destroyed by fire at 2 this morning. All the inmates got out safely, but little or nothing was saved. The Ormondvillfi Pavilion Committße have decided to hold a dance in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening, when the trophies won at the cricket rgatch ladies v. gentlemen, which is to be played in the afternoon, will be presented. They consist of one for the best all-round lady player and two for the two highest scorers, while a pipe will be awarded to the best dressed man. Rome of the men's dresses are very elaborate, others pretty and of dove like innocence, and will no doubt give the ladies who are to be uideres some considerable trouble in awarding; the prize. Good music ha 9 been procured for the dance, and ample refreshment will be provided. The report of the Dannevirke Permanent Building Society, which will be presented to the shareholders at the annual meeting t«-night, congratulates them on the satisfactory results of the year's work. The shares of the Society have proved a highly profitable investment, but it is desirable that more investment shares be taken up, and the directors ask that shareholders assist to that end by briuging under notice of their friends the profitable investment offered in these shares. It will be the duty of shareholders to elect directors for the coming year in place of Messrs G. Wratt, C. Baddeley, and A. Paul, who retire in the ordinary course, but who are eligible for re-election; and also to appoint auditors for the year. The meeting will be held at Messrs Thomson and Walker's office at 7.30 p.m. E. Lloyd and Co. are exhibiting a lovely collection of ladies' and children's millinery.

A cable states that a marriage baa been arranged between Miss Ada Crbssley and Dr. Francis Mueeke, of Adelaide. The elderly man Mclnnes, who was refused admission to New Zealand on his last trip, on account of poverty and infirmity, has left Sydney again by the same vessel. We understand that the Beacomfield Hotel, Mabotuku, I*3 likely to again change hands. The annual harvest and festival tea and social in connection with the Norsewood Methodist Church was held in the Town Hall on Saturday evening, and was pronounced to be a record meeting in every sense of the word. Tea commenced at 7.30. and the tables were not cleared until 9 o'clock, after which anthems were meritoriously rendered by the choir, and games and various comI petitions were indulged in. In the ! nail-driving Mrs O'Hara came first and Mrs A. C. Colling second, aud hat-trim-ming for men was won by Mr Ganna- | way. The produce stall was a feature of the evening, and was well patronised.' The Norsewood Brass Band enlivened i the proceedings by playing selections outside the ball. The Rev. J.
