New Sale Yards.

The sale yards which have been con- j Btructed in New street (off Miller's road) by Messrß Williams and Kettle in conjunction with Messrs. Abraham and Williams ftave been designed pn a thoroughly tip-to-date acd improved principle, i The cattle pens are constructed in a half circle around an arena in whiob. the cattle are sold: The stook' are taken from, their pens— two half circular- rows of which "are separated by a '• race"— and' driven along to the arena in which they are in fuU view of intending purchasers. Seating accommodation fer 300 persons is provided around one half of this pen, being m the form of a gallery conveniently arranged. Thia. gallery is to be covered and the L publio will thus be protected from th« j elements. On tho opposite sicte of th« < selling irena or pen the auctipner's rostrum is .located, and at his back is a convenient office : .in which clerioal work is carried on. The j .gallery faces in a north-westerly direction, and the best possible lighting is thus obtained. This is a very import- | |ant point/and the: yards were purposely designed with a .view, to this end.. Under this arrangement the auctioneer is considerably . favoured in catching bids. Another point about (this yard which is worthy of note is that when horses are being offered for sale and they are ridden or Jed through the yard, and along the •• races "on either side their "paces" can be Seen from directly in frout or behind, according (to the direction in which they are ■going.' This is an advantage which ■will be readily recognised by both the vendors and purchasers. After cattle |are disposed of they are driven, through irate on the opposite side of the peri to whici they nave entered and are then. frpm wh«snc# ;tHey came. The,Bheep pens are also constructed on modern principles and for convenience in handling. Those who attended, the sale yesterday were well satisfied with the new yards, and the enterprise of the abovementioned firms is bound to "be appreciated .by the farming community and those whose business brings them to the yards.- . .
