Mr Henry M Merridew, Soufclibr'ootn, Devizes, writes to a Honie paper : — "Apropos of your reference respecting the surname of her Majesty the Queen, kindly allow me to mention I have newspaper authority bearing on the subject. At a dinner, ,at which some distinguished notables were present, the conversation lapsed as to the correct surname of tho Royal Family. The question waspufc to a celebrated historian who was present, who implied, 'G-uelph, of course.' has in all other cases and that the surname of the present house must be the Prince Consort's. 'But what is the . surname of the Prince Consort's .family?' Simple, but staggering^ No one knew. All guessed 'arid all were wrong. ' It fraospire/dj hdwiever, that the dorreot name was ' Wettin,' Of course, no one had heard of at before, and all smiled at the idea of the Guelphs being reduced to ' Wettins'< ! The point, was. referred to Theodore A£ar : tin.; ' You are quite right,' said the biographer to the Prince Consort. ' Wettin is .the family n/une ; -, of the house of ; Saxony, to whom the; .dominion .of. u Saxony came. in. the year 1420.'
