AN EXPLANATION.

" (To The Editor.) Sir,— Sometime ago, during the time that you were without a reporter here, some one sent you a letter reflecting on the conduct of the man who had charge of the instruments and would not give up the big drum. Now, as I had charge of the instruments, and was the party meant, I was going to write in reply, but did not think it worth whita Now, however, I have been subjected to some annoyance on account of the matter, and will, with your permission, say .a few words. On the evening in question a number of boys came to me for the drum, but, of course, I would not give them the chance of causing damage to the instrument. Next came the man who had been the big drummer, but who had sent in his resignation sometime before this, and who had no earthly right to demand the drum. He would have got it by becoming responsible for any damages if'he had come himself at first, but he should have known better than to send a lot of boys for it. When he came to me for tho drum he should have been a little more temperate in his language than he was, as but for disappointing others at the meeting I would not have given the drum then. — I am, etc., Caretaker. Norsewood, Sept. 14.
