TRIALS FOR WHANGAREI The Whangarel candidates Sousa and Royal Slipper were among the best workers at Takanini this morning, when all gallops were recorded on the inside grass, the poles being out 15ft and the going fast. Sousa was associated with Balmacara over five furlongs, and shaped pleasingly to be on terms at the end in 1.4 2-5. Sousa is very well and promises to race promisingly on Saturday. Royal Slipper galloped right into favour for the Manaia Handicap, when she worked with Peter Gregor over half a mile in 50s, time which was not bettered during the morning. The Paper Slipper filly has been treated to a patient preparation and appears likely to show form early. Old Scot and Steppeland were together at the end of half a mile in 50 3-ss, Babrow and Beau Martian clocking 51s, Sweet Girl 51 2-ss, Sir Bian 555, and Hunting Park 54 3-ss. Jovial Song and Gay Joy were on terms at the end of five furlongs in 1.4 2-5, Default requiring 1.5, Coronaire and Perdition 1.6, General March and Bycroft 1.5 3-5, Royal Merit and Corineus 1.5 4-5. Over three furlongs Knight Templar and the Molten colt clocked 395; Floral Dance equalled this time, Clunstead took 40s, Joy Foot (easily) 42 3-ss.
