SEA BORN'S TRICK

£2000 EVENT VISITOR AGAIN TROTTING AT EPSOM In. one of the best contests seen on the Alexandra Park course for a long;time past, Sea Born came with a great burst of speed in the home stretch to defeat Lady Dawn by half a length for the Laoour Day Handicap, main event of the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting. But this is not all. At least five horses had winning prospects at the distance pole, where Lady Dawn was just a fraction in front of Sea Born and Highlai.J: Scott (rails), while Knave of Diamonds and Volo Senwod were within a length of the leader and both going strongly. The meeting was Jield under excellent track and weather conditions. Sea Born got his nose In front about 30 yards from the winning post. Volo Senwod was weakening at that stage, but Lady Dawn was holding on solidly and Knave of Diamonds was being hard driven. Sea Born increased his advantage to win all out in the gooa time of 4.21, Volo Senwod taking third place in 4.18 4-5. Despite Volo Senv/od's excellent run, his defeats at the meeting mean that he has not qualified for the £7500 New Zealand Trotting Cup, 4.22 class, which is to be run at Addington next month. When, the meeting commenced four of the acceptors for this meeting had a chance to qualify. They were Joan Conquest, Knave of Diamonds, Lady Dawn and Volo Senwod, and none of them won. Medical Student was the early leader from Lady Dawn and Highland Scott, but at the end of the first three, Highland Scott had dashed into the lead to show the way along the back from Medical Student, Lady Dawn, Sea Born and Black LabeT. With a mile and a quarter completed, Highland Scott was still show-1 Ing the way, but only narrowly from: Lady Dawn, the pair being followed by Sea Born, Medical Student, Knave of I Diamonds, Black Label and Volo Senwod. There was very little between these seven horses as they raced from the half mile, but Lady Dawn was doing a bit better than Highland Scott at the quarter, where Sea Born and Knave of Diamonds were closing on them and Volo Senwod making up ground on the outside. Once In line for the Judge, the names of several horses were called, and with justification, too, but Sea Born was too strong for his opponents. Knave of Diamonds was a disappointing fourth and he was followed by Medical Student, Black Label and Highland Scott. Visitors Begin Well Again The straight-out trotter Firewater, racing against a field of pacers in the first division of the Junction Handicap, gave a display of her undoubted quality by leading all the way to win in the fast time cjf 3.23 1-5 from a 3.33 mark. Firewater «; is a visitor from the South and this made eight wins at the meeting for southern competitors. Mine Host and Daphne Grattan broke badly at the start and were soon in a hopeless position, while Firewater made play most of the way from Toronto Lass, Noble Ken, Balalaika, Typical, Scrounger and Noble de Oro. Inside the last quarter Toronto Las 3 and Typical closed on Firewater, but she drew away again In the straight, while fc Noble ■. de Oro finished on fast to take second place from Noble Ken. Typical weakened at the finish to be fourth and then came Balalaika and Kewple's Pride. The second division was won narrowly by Red Ace, who led all the way and Just lasted long enough to get a head verdict from Toushay, who finished fast on the outside, with Durato a similar distance away third. The last-named came through very fast on the rails in the home stretch and Was going better than either of the other two at the judge. Solidly-backed Lord Peterson would not strike a gait at the start and lost at least seven seconds. He showed pace after that, but never threatened danger. Lone Raider, Indian Lad and Sir Archie were well placed behind Red Ace to the home turn. Indian Lad did best of this trio to take fourth place from Tommy True, with Sir Archie next. Toushay Just Beaten Finishing with rare gameness, Vindictive Lady, second favourite for the Green Lane Handicap, wore down Toushay just a few strides from the judge's box to win by half a length. Entering the home stretch, the race looked to be a certainty for Toushay. who had run fast past Bel Esprit to take a clear lead. Pardon Me broke up badly at the start, while Etta Girl and Songbird also left their feet during the running to effectively settle their prospects. Bel Esprit was the early leader from Songbird and Vindictive Lady, the first-named setting a solid pace, and she was still In command entering the final lap where Little Hero had run through smartly Into second place two lengths clear of Toushay and Vindictive Lady, who was followed closely by Great Worth and Dolly Scott. Bel Esprit was under a hard drive crossing the top, but Toushay then took over control only to be downed by Vindictive Lady. Great Worth stayed on to take third place and •Was followed by Bel Esprit and Dolly Scott. - Portadown's Handsome Return A long shot, nearly a 20-to-one chance, in Portadown came through fast on the fence to just head Desert Lad before they went past the Judge 'in the Insulation the pacemaker for most of the journey Handicap. The third horse, Gamester, was and was actually the first to turn for home, but he was headed 30yds from the post by Desert Lad, who in turn Went down to the faster-finishing Portadown. The lastnamed was one of the first to become prominent, but Broughton restrained him to follow Gamester past the stand, where Heliopolis, Desert Lad, Sypland, Volterra and Aranui Jack were the clostest attendants. The order was-much the same when they came round again,* and Gamester and Heliopolis (together) made play across the top Just clear of Portadown and Desert Lad, with Volterra hard on their heels. Straightening up, Gamester was In the lead, while Desert Lad was challenging on the outside, Portadown pushIng through on the'rails and Volterra in the middle of the track commencing to feel the strain. Portadown did best to win by a head. Desert Lad beating Gamester by a length for second place, and then came Sypland, Heliopolis, Volterra and Aranui Jack. The last-named, who was favourite, was a bit slow to strike his hopples. However, he was fairly well placed with three furlongs to go, but was squeezed back u> lose what may have proved a winning position. . Protest Dismissed After the Insulation Handicap, a protest was entered by V. L. Mackie, driver of Heliopolis, who finished fifth, against Portadown for interference. After hearing the evidence of those concerned, the stewards decided to dismiss the protest. JUNCTION HANDICAP of £700. . One mile and a bait. , Limit 3.33. . - First Division: 7—t— FIREWATER .
