FALSE FIRE ALARM
NAVAL RATING CAUGHT BENCH IMPOSES PINE OF £5 Following a turn-out by the fire brigade to a false alarm at 10.40 o'clock last night, a naval rating, Trevor Hescott Young (19), was arrested on two charges of mischief by wilfully breaking glass valued at 4d and 2/, and another of giving a false alarm to the Auckland Metropolitan Fire Brigade. When he appeared before Messrs. W. J. Jaffrey and H. V. Hampton, J.P.'s, in the Police Court this morning, Young admitted all three charges. Senior-Sergeant Munro said the glass in the alarm box in Grey's Avenue, near Myers Park, was broken. On the arrival of the brigade Deputy-Superintendent MacKenzie and a constable made a search. Later they heard the breaking of glass near the Town Hall and found that a glass in one of the island traffic lights was brok-n. When first seen Young den t i all knowledge of the incidents, but later admitted the offences. "The fire brigade looks upor. the giving of false alarms as a serious offence," added Mr. .:unro, 'for they cause much trouble, annoyance and expense." For giving the false alarm of fire, Young was fined £5 ajid was convicted and o-dered to make good the damage ~on the other two counts.
