TWO ORDERS AMENDED
THE FURNITITRE INDUSTRY' New rates of remuneration are provided for in an amendment to the Northern Industrial District (except Gisborne Judicial District) Furniture Trade Apprenticeship Order, which has been made by the Arbitration Court. A similar amendment has been made to the Gisborne Furniture Trade Apprenticeship Order. The minimum weekly wage rates for apprentices are calculated as percentages of an amount equal to 40 times the nominal hourly award wage rate for journeymen in the appropriate branch of the industry. For apprentices commencing when under 18 years of age, the new rates start at 23 per cent for the first six months and are increased by 6 per cent for each succeeding six months until for the tenth six months the rate is 77 per cent of the amount. For apprentices commencing when 18 years or over, the percentage is 35 per cent for the first six months, rising by 6 per cent each six months to 89 per cent for the tenth six months. For apprentices in branches of the industry where a three-year term is provided the percentage is 47 per cent for the first six months, rising by 6 per cent each six months to 77 per cent for the sixth six months. The Court has also issued an amendment to the Northern Industrial District Seagrass, Cane, Wickerworking and General Basketware Apprenticeship Order, and the same minimum rates as provided for the furniture trade order have been laid down. In both orders the new rates are subject to the Court's two bonuses and apply to all existing contracts. The orders are deemed to have taken effect on July 1, 1945.
