BIG FIELDS

AUCKLAND MEETING

THIRTY IN WELCOME STAKES

With a field of 30 horses entered in the Welcome Stakes at the. Auckland Racing Club's spring meeting at Ellerslie on Saturday next, there is a strong probability that the two-year-old race will have to be run in two divisions. This will be necessary if there are more than 20 starters. In that event the stake will be increased to £1300, the winner of each division to receive £450, second £100 and third £50. The balance of the prizemoney will be divided between the breeders of the winners of the divisions. Provision will have to be made for divisions in the Gordon Handicap and in the Shorts Handicap, although the field is only one over the safety limit in the latter event. If divisions are necessary, the stake for the Gordon Handicap will be increased to £800, the winner of each division to receive £300, second £70 and third £30. In the Shorts Handicap it will be increased tq £1000, the winner of each division to receive £375, second £75 and third £50.

The Mltchelson Cup has drawn a field of 22 runners, including Flying Tor (Foxton Cup winner), Our Gold (Avondale Cup), Swift Quarry, a brilliant performer last season; Representative, who made a return to form when he won a sprint at Paeroa, and Lou Rosa, last year's winner, who heads t,he handicap. There is a big field of 26 acceptors in the Great Northern Guineas. It includes Batal (winner of the Avondale Guineas), Gigli (second in the Wanganui Guineas), and Duplicity, a smart two-year-old who was second to Balmacara in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes last year. Of the field four, Batal, Ruling Master (who won a race at the Avondale meeting), Black Ace and Gigli remain in the Wellington Guineas, to be run at Wellington a week later. Rating, winner of the two-year-old race at the Avondale meeting, and Kirstymac (Debutant Stakes winner), will meet in the Welcome Stakes, but there are some other smart youngsters engaged, including the improving Balancer. Shining Ring, winner of the Hastings Stakes, is not in the field.

The scheduled order of the running of the events has been changed as under. Acceptances:— GORDON HANDICAP of £600.
