FINAL MATCHES
AUCKLAND HOCKEY
TWO TEAMS BRACKETED
The Auckland Hockey Association's season was completed on Saturday when a double attraction was presented at the Papatoetoe ground. The first game was between Owai Rovers and Somerville to decide which eleven would become the champion of champions and holder of the Kent Cup. After seventy minutes of play, time was called with the score even —one goal each. Two extra spells of ten minutes were then played with the result still in doubt. Taking the field for another ten minutes with the proviso that a penalty corner would decide the issue, the teams strove hard for a decision.: Again the whistle sounded with the teams even. The emergency committee of the Auckland Hockey Association then met and decided to bracket the teams for the season. The game did not provide the exhibition anticipated. Several of the players were too tense and the freedom that should have marked their efforts was missing. Somerville held a territorial advantage, but Owai Rovers made a strenuous effort in the concluding stages and the final bracketing of the teams for the title of champion of champions and joint holders of the Kent Cup was a fitting conclusion to a dour struggle.
The Representatives versus The Rest provided a much brighter display than anticipated. The selectors of The Rest i were somewhat limited in their choice, but their team, while disclosing several promising players, also fully extended the Representatives. The first spell ended with the score one goal each, but in the second half the Representatives' combination enabled four more goals to be added to The Rest's one. The final result, 5 goals to 2, gave the Representatives possession of the Selectors' Cup.
