"CALAMITY FOR BOARD"

MR. D. W. GTJTHRIE RESIGNS

The resignation of Mr. D. W. Guthrie from the position of acting medical superintendent of the Green Lane Hospital was accepted by the Auckland Hospital Board at a meeting last evening. Mr. Guthrie in a letter to the board pointed out that his appointment was for the duration of the war, and that he was given to understand that the post would eventually cease to embrace clinical work. This was the fundamental consideration in his acceptance of the post, and his interests being still primarily surgical, he could see no future in the position for him. furthermore, there was no suitable full-time surgical post to which he could be transferred at the hospital.

Expressing regret that he would be leaving the service, Mr. Guthrie thanked the board:;and the board's officers for the treatment extended to him during the years he had served.

The board decided to inform Mr. Guthrie that although the war was not legally terminated, it wr.s agreeable to accepting his resignation and would take immediate steps to arrange for the appointment of his successor, but that until such time as the replacement could be affected he would be required to,continue his duties. ..-.'.,■■ ~...'.

, "I look upon it as a-calamity for this board that Mr. GuihTie'is resigning,'' said the chairman'Of the Green Lane Hospital committee, Mr. G. T. Parvin.

The place Green Lane Hospital held in public estimation was due to Mr. Guthrie's ability, not only as an administrator but also as a surgeon, he said.

Several other members of . the board ..also paid tribute to Mr. Guthrie's work, and the board placed on record its appreciation of his Valuable services. ?■>..
