SALE OF WINE
A MISLEADING LABEL
HOTEL MANAGER FINED
P.A. WELLINGTON, this. day. On a charge of selling wine with a false and misleading label, Frank Hickson Drewitt, manager of the St. George Hotel, was fined £5.
An inspector bought a bottle labelled '*St. George Special Old Port," and on analysis it was found to contain 17.6 per cent proof spirit. Mr. W. R. Birks, who conducted the prosecution, said the standard fcr port was 25 per cent or at most 45 per cent proof spirit. The Department regarded it as important that the standard should be maintained.
Mr. W. P. Sharland, for the defendant, said the fault lay in the hands of New Zealand growers. The wine had been bought from the Pasadena Wine Company at 55/ a gallon and retailed at 8/6 a bottle. There were no means by which the licensee could determine the alcoholic content, except by analysis. Replying to the magistrate; Mr. Birks said that there was no suggestion that the licensee had diluted the wine.
The magistrate .said the penalties under the section were very severe, but he would only fine the defendant £5.
