ENTERPRISE FETTERED
REHABILITATION HANDICAP „i Parliamentary Reporter. WELLINGTON, this day. It was contended by Mr. S. W. Smith (Nat., Bay of Islands), speaking in Jthe Address-in-Reply debate in the House of Representatives yesterday, that the greatest obstacle to the rehabilitation of returned men was the mass of restriction in almost every ivenue of employment.
He personally believed that every man who had fought for his country had the right on his return to follow any avenue of employment he chose. If he wished to be a farmer he should have the right to freehold, and if he preferred to become a trader or small manufacturer he should not be obliged to go to some bureaucrat to get permission. He believed the Minister for Rehabilitation was doing a good job within the limits laid down by his party. The Industrial Efficiency Regulations should be the first to go, for the country's prosperity demanded that free enterprise and open competition should be permitted.
