EXPECTANT MOTHERS
NO HOMES TO GO TO Parliamentary Reporter. WELLINGTON, this day. The view that the regulations governing maternity homes were unreasonable and were cutting down the number of homes, Avith the result that the problem of providing beds for expectant mothers was more acute than would appear was expressed by Mr. J. T. Watts (Nat., Riccarton), when tie spoke in the Ad-dress-in-Reply debate in the House of Representatives last night. Mr. Watts made particular reference to the position in Christchurch where, he said, as far as he could gather from the figures, there were at least 300 expectant mothers at the present time who did not know where they were going to have their babies.
In a recent statement the Minister of Health had said it was not the Government's intention to close down small maternity homes or to prevent the licensing of new ones, provided there was reasonable compliance with the regulations. Those regulations at the present time were having the effect of reducing the number of homes. He would remind the Minister that the reply he gave this week would not solve the problem of the 300 expectant mothers in Christchurch who could not book into a single maternity home' near their city. The Minister should realise that when babies were due to arrive they just would not wait.
