FUTURE NEED
POWER FROM SOUTH ISLAND
MR. SEMPLE'S PREDICTION • Parliamentary Reporter WELLINGTON, this day. When the big plan for ten powerstations on the Waikato was completed the possibilities for major hydro-electric schemes in the North Island would be nearing an end, said the Minister of Works, Mr. Semple, speaking in the Address-in-Reply debate in the House of Representatives last night. That, however, was ndt the position in the South Island, where there were immeasurable opportunities. Some day New Zealand would be compelled to. take power from the South to the North Island, or to take factories to the South Island where power was available. (Loud hear, hears from South Island members.)
In addition, they had to keep their eye on the coal supply position. Only 20 years' supply of bituminous coal was in sight, and that meant that water power had to be developed to its maximum in the Dominion. The day would come when electricity would be used for railways, which would give better, more constant and cleaner service, with less interruption.
