NEW WATER MAIN

IMPROVING CITY SUPPLY

AID TO INDUSTRIAL AREA

An improvement in the water supply to the principal industrial area of the city will result from the construction by the City Council's waterworks department of a new trunk main from the Ponsonby reservoir to the waterfront. Work on the project will begin shortly. Four miles in length, the main will run down Albert Street, across Quay Street and up to the existing main in Princes Street, thus forming a loop around the industrial area. Laying of the pipes will commence from the reservoir, 24in piping being used for the first half mile and piping ranging in size from 15in to 21in for the remainder of the distance. At each cross street the main will interconnect with the existing reticulation. A contract for the supply of the smaller piping was let some months ago. Besides greatly improving the supply of water for industry, the main will help to maintain the pressure for fire-fighting purposes. The area consumes up to 4,000.000 gallons of water daily.
