CUP COMING BACK

18-FOOTERS' TROPHY

SEQUEL TO 1939 RACE The cup for the 13-foot world championship yacht race, last held In Auckland in 1939, and won by the local boat Manu, is at long last to be delivered to the winner. After the contests in February, 1939, there was a lot of controversy following a protest in regard to a breach of the sailing rules in the final race entered by the skipper of an Auckland competitor, Limerick. The protest was upheld and Manu became the winner of the cup. . The prizemoney of £100 was duly paid over to the owners of Manu, Messrs. Goodfellow and Chamberlin.

The decision of the sailing committee was disputed by Bert Swinbourne, skipper of the Sydney boat Taree, against which the protest was lodged, and he took the cup back to Sydney. Later the Sydney officials recognised the ruling in the protest and condemned Swinbourne's action, and struck him off the membership list of the New South Wales Sailing League. Swinbourne' has now apologised for his action and returned the cup to the league. The latter has written to Sir Ernest Davis stating the cup is being returned for presentation to the winner. In making this announcement at the prize-giving of the Victoria Cruising Club last night, Sir Ernest said the return of the trophy would make for good feeling between New Zealand and Australian yachtsmen.
