FAMILY PROTECTION

Reports covering a total of 85 cases were presented by the officers at the monthly executive meeting of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children held recently. The collector advised that there had been a good response from the subscribers. The Hon. B. Martin presided. It was stated that 64 visits were made to homes and institutions and the Magistrates' and Children's Courts attended regularly. In several cases in which the society had not been able to make domestic adjustment the women were giveft the help of the society's solicitor for legal proceedings, but in the majority, reconciliations were effected. Once again the society was able to provide protection for a family of small children by assisting the parents to marry and so legitimise them. The children will now have a right to benefits under Social Security, and in the event of the father's sickness or death, will be provided for instead of becoming a charge on the community. There were also several cases in which girls were assisted to obtain affiliation orders, and other cases where the society's intervention was the means of persuading girls to remain at home when they wished to break away from parental control at ■ an early age.
