FRUIT MACHINE SEIZED
£18 PROFIT IN THREE WEEKS
When police went to the United Club in Albert Street in April to make inquiries concerning the system by.which liquor was supplied to members, a fruit machine was found and seized. As a result, the club was charged in the Police Court to-day with using the premises as a common gaming house, and William George McCowatt, the secretary, with assisting in the management of a common gaming house. Mr. Trevor Henry appeared for both defendants, who pleaded guilty. Constable Richardson said that McCowatt told him that the club purchased the fruit machine for £37 three weeks before its discovery by the police, and that during that period it showed a profit of £18. Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., said he would reserve the question of penalty pending his decision in another case where the club was charged with a breach of the Licensing Act.
