SWEEPS CHIMNEYS

SMART YOUNG BLONDE

WORKING 18 HOURS DAILY

A 19-year-old, smartly dressed, good-looking blonde told Mr. P.' H. Levien, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court to-day that she was an assistant to a chimney sweep. "It is interesting to find a girl of her age and type on that kind of work," said Mr. I. F. Kronfeld, representative of the district manpower officer. "It may have been work coupled with an interest," said the magistrate smilingly. . Charged with failing to report to the manpower office for an interview, the girl said she had been a waitress in a large tearoom in the city. The girl's record of attendance at the tearoom had not been satisfactory, said Mr. Kronfeld. The girl said she had been working as assistant to a chimney sweep, but she did not know that her employer had failed to obtain permission to engage her. She earned £4 weekly as a sweep, whereas her wage of £2 as a waitress was insufficient to keep her and pay room rent of £1 5/.' In addition, she worked at night in a servicemen's club.

Mr. Levien informed the girl that he did not blame her if she could earn even £14 a week, but told her that she would have to comply with the provisions of the regulations. He adjourned the information for a week so that she could report to the manpower office for instructions.
