GAS STRIKE ECHO
DIRECTION TO WORKERS
ALLEGATION OF OVER-RULING Parliamentary Reporter. WELLINGTON, this day. A reference to the recent gas strike in Auckland was made by Mr. W. A. Bodkin (Nat., Central Otago) when speaking in the debate on military defaulters in the House of Representatives yesterday. He contended that if men in England defied the law as had been the case in New Zealand they would have had to face the consequences.
Referring to the Auckland gas workers who were on sine die adjournments, he said their cases were reviewed by the Armed Forces Appeal Board and they were ordered into camp. He asked what was the direction of those in high places in the Labour movement. He suggested they had stepped in to overrule the Court.
Mr. A. S. Richards (Govt., Mount Roskill): Would you deny gas to the Auckland people? Mr. Bodkin said he did not stand for people in high places in the Labour movement obtaining preferential treatment.
