WORKS MANAGER RETIRES

BLIND INSTITUTE OFFICE

Following 38 years' service with the New Zealand Institute for the Blind, Mr. Walter Packman, the works manager, has retired at the age of .75. Tributes to his work and efficiency were paid by several speakers at a farewell concert last evening, when presentations of a wallet containing banknotes and a tobacco pouch were made by Mr. A Irwin on behalf of the inmates and by Mr. J. Charleston for members of the staff. Speakers included Mr. C. I. Nathan, chairman of the board of trustees, and Mr. J. E. Broadfoot, a director. Expressions of appreciation of Mr. Packman's services were also received from the matron Miss C. Swanston, at present m Sydney, and from the Naval Depot Store in Auckland. The concert, which was organised by Mr. C. Pilgrim, was presented by blind inmates and members of the staff.- . Mr. Packman's successor is Mr. J. C. Hughes.
