NOT UNLOADED

POTATO SHIPMENT

WATERSIDERS' DECISION

Delay in the discharge of a shipment of potatoes brought from the South Island by the Union Company's freighter Waipiata has been caused by the recent decision of the Auckland Waterside Workers' Union not to work on Saturday afternoons. The potatoes, which arrived to-day, had not been unloaded by noon, and in consequence will not be handled until Monday. The delay in delivery has occurred during a crisis in the potato supply position, as the City Markets are practically bare of the commodity. The shipment was looked forward to yesterday as likely to relieve the shortage, for which heavy gales affecting coastal shipping for some weeks are blamed. Another ship carrying potatoes is expected from the south on Monday.

The waterside workers' decision last month not to work on Saturday afternoons was a national one, involving Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin and Port Chalmers.
