"DOKATOR BEELL"

JUNGLE MIRACLE-MAN

N.Z. AIRMAN'S GOOD WORK

In a little village set deep in the jungles of Guadalcanal' the natives talk of a new miracle-man. They call him "Dokator Beell."

His friends know him as Leading Aircraftman Bill Mahood, of the R.N.Z.A.F., says B.U.P. For the past year he has been giving medical attention to the natives of the village and, using disinfectants, ointments, clean bandages and injections, he has practically cleared the village of an epidemic of scabies, ringworm, tropical ulcers, and yaws. His fame spread among the natives quickly. One man walked 16 miles through the jungle with a diseased foot that would have sent a white man to bed for weeks, just to have treatment from "Dokator And even the official quarters heard of his fine work and granted him permission to carry on—usually villages throughout the Pacific are "out of bounds." Occasionally R.N.Z.A.F. doctors have helped him with serious cases, but generally he works alone, relying on his own judgment and the more or less standard cures.
