BILLIARDS TITLE

HOLDSAVORTH IN SEMIFIXAL

In one of the quarter-finals of the Auckland provincial open billiards championship last night, at Barton and McGill's, L. F. W. Holdsworth defeated J. Shepherd by 500 to 406. Holdsworth played consistently but did not make any breaks beyond the forties, breaking down several times when playing fluently. He took the lead from the start, making breaks of 42. 34 and 29, to reach 128 and be 60 ahead. After reaching his first hundred, with a break of 28, Shepherd made the best break of the match, 61, and took the lead at 187 to 174. Holdsworth then played more consistently than his opponent and took the lead, and held it throughout the rest of the game. He passed the 300 mark 40 ahead, and then drew further away with the scores 426 to 313 in his favour. Holdsworth wanted only 28 when Shepherd reached 400, and he ran to points with 20 unfinished. Holdsworth's best breaks were 42, 34, 39, and 41, while Shepherd, apart from his 61, made several breaks just short of 30. S. Baker, of Hamilton, won by default from H. D. Brinsden. Another quarterfinal will be played to-night between H. V.'hitford and S. Donohue. Next Monday C. Mason meets the title-holder, M. D. White.
