"WILL NOT OBEY"
CARPENTER'S STAND Ttfie statement that he had worked for others for about 40 years and he was now going to work on his own account was made by Clement James Cole, a middle-aged carpenter, who appeared before Mr. S. I. Goodall, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court this morning, charged with a breach of the Manpower Regulations. Mr. I. Kronfeld, representing the district manpower officer, prosecuted. The magistrate told defendant that under present conditions it was impossible for people to do just as they liked, although it was to be hoped that the time was not far distant when a man could set up on his own account or whatever it was he desired.
However, if defendant persisted in his present attitude he would find himself in serious trouble. "You are only running your head against a brick wall," said Mr. Goodall. "Will you do as you are told?" Defendant: No, sir. The magistrate then imposed a fine of £10. • •
