AUCKLAND DRAINAGE
Referring to his Worship the Mayor's remarks relating to the above Act, reported in Thursday's Star, I would point out to his Worship that no doubt as many experts could be procured to support a West Coast alternative scheme as are favourably reported on the Brown's Island proposals. The Town Planning Society, comprising a panel of reputable engineers, condemned the Brown's Island outfall in 1935. The inquiry of the Local Bills Committee was held at such short notice that there was no possible means of mobilised public opinion being brought to bear. The league is only now realising how many thousands of citizens are opposed to the Act. With respect to pollution, how can anybody be asked to believe that the proposed treatment will render the effluent innocuous. The sedimentation treatment intended will only remove the heavier solids and the liquid filth remaining will flow into the waters of the Waitemata and spread over its surface as it is lighter than salt water. All the experts in the world would not persuade me nor many others that such a state of affairs is not pollution and a threat to our beaches. T. C. WEBSTER, President, Auckland and Suburban Drainage League. .
