American Troops 19 Miles From Spezia Naval Base JAP AND NEGRO UNITS Rec. 10 a.m. LONDON, April 9, The new Fifth Army advance to within two miles of Massa, at the western end of the Italian front, has brought American negro and Japanese troops to under 19 miles of the great naval base at Spezia, reports Reuters Rome correspondent. Fifth Army troops, advancing from the south against scattered resistance, are also outflanking the town with an encircling move to the east. Advancing astride the Ligurian coastal highway, American Fifth Army troops made further progress and captured two villages, reports an Allied communique from Italy. British Eighth Army troops have cleared up the pocket of enemy resistance north of the Reno River.
