KEPT A SECRET

FORMULA FOR OINTMENT ALLEGED PARALYSIS CUBE O.C. SYDNEY, April 6. Mr. L. Featherstone, of Melbourne, refused to divulge to the New South Wales Department of Public Health the formula or the ointment which he used in his alleged cures of infantile paralysis, the Minister for Health, Mr. Kelly said. Mr. Kelly added that Mr. Featherstone had been given an assurance that his formula would be treated confidentially. Mr. Kelly said he had been willing to have the ointment tried out on voluntary patients, and under the supervision of representatives of the medical profession and the hospital authorities, but before that was done the ointment would have to be analysed to ascertain whether there might be any deleterious substance in it Mr. Kelly said he had received from the chairman of the Hospitals Commission, Dr. Lilley, a report on the recent interview which members of the consultative council on infantile paralysis and the Hospitals Commission had with Mr. Featherstone. Dr. Lilley reported that Mr. Featherstone claimed to have cured by his treatment a number of serious ailments apart from infantile paralysis, including blood poisoning, hernia of the diaphragm, and Paget's disease. In the opinion of Dr. Lilley, the Minister said, the cases of Paget's disease were really cases of osteomyelitis (inflammation of the bone marrow). In reply, Mr. Featherstone said: "I have a very good reason for refusing to disclose the formula. On another occasion when a formula was handed over, the knowledge thus gained was very wrongly used as a means of preventing sufferers from obtaining the benefit of a valuable remedy." Mr. Featherstone said he had been using his ointments without the slightest adverse result for 10 years.
