AUCKLAND CHESS SEASON

TO OPEN NEXT WEEK The new chess season will be opened next Monday night according to a.decision made at the 61st annual meeting of the Auckland Chess Club last evening. The report and balance-sheet were unanimously adopted. Mr. D. I. Jones, one of the older members of the club, and five times club champion and the club's representative at New Zealand championship meetings on a number of occasions, was elected a life member. The election of the officers resulted: — Patron, the Rev. H. B. Wingfield; president, Mrs. E. L. Short; vice-presidents, Messrs. H. Oakley Browne and A. L. Fletcher; secretary, Mrs. D. Jenkins; assistant-secretary, Mr. F. G. McSherry; auditor, Mr. C. G. Lennard; committee, Dr. T. Gordon Short, Messrs. D. R. Richards, N. C. Watt. O. E. Spencer; treasurer, Mr. J. Adkins; receiver of visitors and custodian of club property, IVXr* T"> Jack. The season will open with a lightning tourney. In addition to the ordinary club tourneys, a handicap tournament will be re-introduced as it is considered that that form of competition is best suited to improve the standard of play in the club. A handicap committee will examine the qualifications of players who desire to be included in tournament games. A grading list will then be compiled of all members who desire to play in match games of all descriptions.
