IN TWO ROUNDS

DUNN KNOCKED OUT

CALTAUX'S HARD HITTING j Two rounds sufficed for Vic Caltaux to batter Tommy Dunn, of "Wellington, to a knock-out decision at the Town Hall last night in the professional bout which opened the season there. Actually Caltaux had the fight as good as won after he had thrown the firtt few punches. Dunn was sent to the mat for two counts —eight and nine—in the opening round, and was in a dazed condition at the gong. In the next he offered little resistance against the terrific right-hand swinging of the Aucklander, and in the second minute of the round he was floored by a blow on the side of the face and was counted out by referee Eric Armishaw. If the bout was disappointing in its shortness arid the inability of Dunn, with his greater height and reach, to counter his opponent's characteristic attack, it emphasised once again the power in the punches which Caltaux carries in both hands. In New Zealand, at all events, it is difficult to find an opponent who can stand against his particular style of aggression. Caltaux looked a picture of physical fitness and strength, his bronzed body contrasting with the paleness and less rugged appearance of Dunn. From the outset Caltaux went to the attack and probed Dunn's defence with a left, and the weight of his body spilt the Wellington lad to the canvas. Dunn rose to take a right swing to the side of the head; another right to the head saw him stay down for the count of nine. It looked as if Caltaux would gain a knock-out decision in this round, for Dunn was dazed and groggy as he clinched. Just before the gong he was being punished in his corner and the voice of his trainer urged him to hang on. In the middle of the round his trainer had gone to the ropes protesting against two punches that Caltaux had landed on Dunn's neck as he was falling away from a torrent of blows. Incidentally, this action by a trainer Is an illegality. In the second round Dunn ducked several right swings which grazed his face or landed on his shoulder, but it was only some seconds later that Caltaux connected with a right to the cheekbone and Dunn was counted out. Rising, he went towards Caltaux to resume the fight only to see Caltaux's hand raised in victory. Caltaux weighed in at 10.10 and Dunn 10 ' 5 ' The Amateur Preliminaries A livelv contest between S. Harris, 8.6, and R. Gallagher, 8.0, opened the programme. Harris forced the pace but was slowed up by Gallagher's left. The next two rounds were even, with Harris the more impressive stylist. The decision was a draw. , . , There was some fast punching when W. Taylor, 8.2}, and R. Callender, 8.4. met. Callender swung a dangerouslooking right at times, but Taylor was the cleaner and more effective puncher. The decision in his favour met with a mixed reception, and a ringsider donated a special trophy to the loser. C. Keith, 8.0, was a sturdier lad than C. Hayes, 7.125, but the latter fought him at close quarters to counter his aggression and get the decision. R. Dracivich. 6.9J, beat E. Norwood, 6.13, comfortably on points. D. Godward, 9.8, continued his winning sequence by outboxlng E. 81ack,.9.2. The loser fought wildly and several times ran into the ropes when his opponent moved clear. The bout demonstrated Godward's In the final bout M. McCarthy, 12.1, got a doubtful decision over C. J. Honey, 12.3. Honey used his left to the face with effect though frequently leaving himself open. McCarthy staggered his opponent in the fourth round, but was too tired to make the most of his opportunity. i Referee, H. Brien.
