ROADS AND BRIDGES

IMPROVEMENTS IN NORTH TAR-SEAL.ING WORK APPROVED O.C. WHANGAREI, this day. It is expected that the 630 feet of reinforced concrete bridge over the Mangakahia highway at Titoki will be opened for traffic next month. An Auckland contractor has been engaged for nearly two years on the work, and it is hoped that, with the demolishing of the old structure, which is the longest single-span bridge in the Southern Hemisphere, cables will be obtained for supporting the decking on the 600-foot Tangiteroria bridge, which is closed for vehicles, necessitating a detour of Whangarei and Dargaville traffic. The new bridge across the Northern Wairoa River at Tangiteroria will not be available for eighteen months, the work not having been commenced. Heavy rain last week delayed the raising of the main highway at Taylor's Flat above flood level. Work has commenced on the replacement of the Kiripaka bridge, which gives access to the popular east coast beaches, with a two-way concrete structure, costing £8000. The sealing of a portion of the WhangareiAuckland highway, extending for nearly five miles from the Whangarei borough boundary, through Otaika, is to be carried out duripg the winter, following the presentation of a petition to the Minister of Works, Mr. Semple. This will mean that a continuous length of 45 miles of highway south of Whangarei will be tar-sealed.
