ONLY FOUR STARTERS IN THE OCEAN RACE
Only four boats out of 13 entrants crossed the line in the Balokovic Cup, 95-mile ocean race, which started off the Bean Rock lighthouse at 10 o'clock this morning. Starters were: Rang! (2h -15m), Aramoana (In 3m), Atea (oh) and Cyrena (3h"45m). Frist away was Rangi, which was atjhc starting line well on time and crossed with the gun. Aramoana followed a few seconds later, and soon began to eat out to windward when the two leaders settled down on starboard tack for the beat up the coast to Flat Rock. The big ketch Atea followed, seven minutes iater, and started in pursuit of Rangi and Aramoana. Ten minutes later she was sailing snugly and holding up to windward better than Rangi..although not so high as the weatherly Aramoana. Twenty-three minutes after gunfire Cyrena beat up to the line, crossed and stood well down harbour on port, probably in the hope of picking up a shift along the Rangitoto shore. Meanwhile; the other three were well on their way up the channel, with Aramoana in the windward position, Atea astern but pointing high, and Rangi well down to leeward.
