MEDICAL TRAINING

SCHOOL ADMISSIONS

SELECTION AMENDED

DUNEDIN, Wednesday. A substantial reduction in the number of preferential admissions to the Otago Medical School this year and an increase in the number to be' admitted through the normal channel of having passed the intermediate qualifying examination have been announced by the University of Otago. An amendment to the tentative selection, details of which were published on January 17, has been 'brought about largely as the result of decisions of the National Service Department. Announcing the tentative selections last month, the university advised that all decisions were subject to the approval of the Department. The principal alterations are a decrease in the number of graduates who .were previously selected to go into the medical school and an increase from 65 to 85 in the number of students to be admitted through having passed the intermediate examination and not possessing grounds for preference. Details of the new figures for the respective groupings are given below, but these numbers are yet subject to alteration on account of possible withdrawals and other circumstances. Where a vacancy occurs it will be filled by the next student in order of marks gained in the intermediate examination.

Divided Into Groups The 120 students who Vill enter the school on February 26 are divided into the following groups:— Group 1 (students who passed the intermediate examination and whose courses have been seriously interfered with by war service), two accepted; group 2 (students whose medical courses have been seriously interfered with by war service and who hope to pass the special intermediate examination this month), one accepted and six awaiting the results of examination, a total of seven places reserved; group 3 (students who previously attended second-year medical classes but have not passed the annual terms examination), 12 accepted; group 4 (graduates or intending graduates who passed the intermediate examination), four accepted, one still under consideration, a total of five places allocated; group 5 (students who passed the intermediate examination, selected in order of marks gained), 85 accepted.

The tentative allocations announced on January 17 were: Group 1, 11; group 2, 10; group 3, 16; group 4 (graduates and intending graduates, the latter previously quoted in a separate category), 18; group 5, Go.
