SOUTHLAND MATCH

CANTERBURY LEADS BY 120 P-A. INVERCARGILL, Tuesday. The first day's play in the SouthlandCanterbury representative match to-day produced some bright cr:cKet. Southland spored 116 runs in its nrst Innings, and dismissed Canterbury for 236. At the end of the day Southland had lost one wicket for 33 runs in its second innings. A fine knock by the Southland captain, A. S. Cutler, was the feature of Southland's first innings. Cutler went in first wicket down, and with wickats falling at a fairly rapid pace played a fighting inning's. He scored -60 runs, an exceptionally fine effort in the circumstances. R. W. Pollok was another Southland batsman who shaped well. Nine of the Otago wickets were divided between the brothers Burn. This time it was N. V. Burtt who secured the majority, his figures being six for 37, while T. B. Burtt took three for 46. This brought the letter's bag of wfekets in representative cricket this season to 29. I. B. Cromb provided, the highlight of the afternoon's play, opening Canterbury's first innings with Leggat and giving a fine display of forceful hitting. He scored 60 runs in 40 minutes before being dismissed. H. W. Fraser and G. W. Overton, who opened Southland's attack, bowled short in the first few overs—Fraser was the worse offender — and Cromb punished the bowling severely. Bright displays were also given by K. F. M.
